Distillerie Artemisia is inseparable from Claude-Alain Bugnon, one of the defining figures in the modern revival of Swiss absinthe. He began distilling clandestinely in Couvet around 2000, working from a 1935 recipe that would become La Clandestine. As legalization approached, Bugnon was the first distiller in Couvet to undertake the federal procedures required to become a legal producer.
Since 2005, Artemisia has carried the savoir-faire of the Val-de-Travers well beyond Switzerland. Through international exports, award-winning absinthes and collaborations such as Butterfly Absinthe, the revival of a historic American recipe, Bugnon has become an ambassador for the region while continuing to experiment with powerful blanches, vertes and prolonged oak maturation.
Today, joined by the next generation, Artemisia remains deeply rooted in Couvet: a house born from clandestine tradition, yet distinctly international in its outlook.
